We have a MacBook Pro down!

September 4th, 2007

That’s right, my laptop is dead. It’s a little over a year old and it died on Labor Day during a spirited coding session. I was coding away when suddenly the computer shut off. I checked the power cord – yep, plugged in. I tried the power button – no response. Then I smelled burning plastic… Needless to say, it is pretty fried. I rushed it to the Apple store and they ordered some new parts for it. They think the left I/O and motherboard are probably toast. They also want to replace the power cord. I just hope it can be fixed.

Two lessons here a) buy the AppleCare 3 year warranty and b) backup regularly. The first one I did, so it shouldn’t cost anything. The second, I haven’t been so diligent about. For code, I use subversion repositories not located on my laptop, but for private documents, email, address book, etc. I haven’t done a good job keeping those backed up.

The employees at the Apple store were really cool and got me in, got the laptop in, and parts ordered without any hassle. Thanks guys! Now if only they had given me something to help with the withdrawal…

Here’s hoping it all turns out okay!

Update: I called into AppleCare today to check my status and it said my repair order was canceled!! I got through to a genius and he assured me that he had worked on my computer today and everything was running smoothly. He wanted to do some more tests and it should be ready by tomorrow. Phew!

Update: We’re back in business! After much worry and withdrawal from my laptop, it has returned and everything looks to be a-okay. Hurray for AppleCare!
