Suggest New Music

I need some new music to add to my collection. I’ve been listening to the same couple of CDs for the last 4 months. Please help me by recommending your current favorite!

Leave your suggestions in the comments, I’ll post my purchases here afterward.

The Purchase

So after much time spent listening to samples from the recommendations I received, I settled on five albums. Three came from suggestions, one I’ve been wanting for a long time and one is the soundtrack of a movie my wife and I saw recently and loved. For better or worse, here they are:

  • Arcade Fire: Funeral
  • The Decemberists: Picaresque
  • Feist: The Reminder
  • Okkervil River: Black Sheep Boy
  • Once: Soundtrack

Recommendations

Here is the list of all recommendations (that I didn’t purchase, but maybe you will?):

  • Atmosphere
  • Page France
  • The Mountain Goats
  • Bowerbirds
  • The National
  • The Hold Steady
  • Sufjan Stevens
  • Rodrigo y Gabriela: Rodrigo y Gabriela
  • José González: Veneer
  • Kimya Dawson
  • Mirah
  • Brooke Fraser
  • Portishead
  • Abandoned Pools
  • The Spill Canvas
  • SoftLightes
  • Leslie Hall

A big thank you to everyone who gave their 2¢ and feel free to keep the suggestions coming… I may buy more soon!

You might be better off checking Jimmy/Matt/Dana’s music though as they are closer in genre to you.

    Sunny,

Thanks for the link to your Last.fm, but that only tells me what you’ve been listening to recently/over time. If you had to recommend a single artist/album that someone should get right now, what would it be?

  3. Brian:

I have no idea what type of music you enjoy. I have a creative solution, though.

Check out some of the results here: http://google.com/search?q=stinkweeds+site%3Acrankysince1979.blogspot.com

Those are album purchases from a local Phoenix web designer. Skim through them, look up and listen to samples, and purchase accordingly.

  4. Dana:

I’ve told you! The Decemberists! Also try Page France, The Mountain Goats, Okkervil River, Bowerbirds, etc.

  5. Jason:

Yeah, I’m with Dana. Might also give ‘The National’, ‘The Hold Steady’ and ‘Sufjan Stevens’ a shot. Here’s my music: http://www.last.fm/user/3twenty3

  6. Ms. Herr:

Not so new in terms of release dates, but among my absolute favorites is Rodrigo y Gabriela (album of same name). Great acoustic latin guitar, no lyrics, but with a empassioned rock intensity.

  7. Curtis Miller:

Brian, don’t worry about my tastes, what do you enjoy and recommend?

Dana, I figured you’d suggest that. Thanks for your other recommendations, too. I’ll look into them.

Jason, thanks, man. I’ll look into those.

  8. Curtis Miller:

Ms. Herr, I first heard Rodrigo y Gabriela when they released their self titled album. They are awesome guitarists. Good suggestion!

  9. Jason:

A little slower, but you might want to check out José González, his ‘Veneer’ album. http://www.last.fm/music/Jos%C3%A9+Gonz%C3%A1lez/Veneer

  10. Dana:

I agree with all of Jason’s, particularly Sufjan Stevens and Jose Gonzales. Those two men are fantastic. Also try Feist, Kimya Dawson, and Mirah if you like women who sing.

    Lots of indie shit

  12. Ralph:

You should take a listen to Brooke Fraser Jennifer calls her my other girlfriend because I listen to her so much. Her music is toward a Christian slant. Her lyrics are deep and meaningful and her voice is exquisite.

  13. Dana:

I have four of the five albums you just bought. Nice choices. All of them, seriously.
